Scripture Reading
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
Devotional Thought
Some weeks, the work hurts.
Not because God isn’t faithful — but because the brokenness we witness is real. The stories don’t leave us easily. Faces linger in our prayers. The injustice feels personal. And sometimes, no amount of Scripture feels strong enough to soften the ache.
This is the side of justice work few people talk about.
Working alongside Free International means stepping into places where innocence has been stolen, trust has been shattered, and healing feels painfully slow. There are moments when hope feels fragile — when prayer feels more like groaning than praise.
And yet, Scripture doesn’t tell us to be strong at all costs. It tells us God draws near to the brokenhearted — not the polished, not the unaffected, but the crushed.
If your heart feels heavy this week, you are not failing.
If the tears come easily, you are not weak.
If the burden feels too much, you are not alone.
God does some of His deepest work in the ache we wish away. He meets us in the lament. He sits with us in the silence. And He carries what we were never meant to hold on our own.
This week, don’t rush past the pain. Bring it to Him. He is already close.
Reflection Questions
What part of the work or calling has felt especially heavy lately?
Where have you tried to be strong instead of honest before God?
How might God be inviting you to rest, grieve, or release what you’re carrying?
Prayer
God, I’m tired. My heart hurts, and I don’t always know what to do with what I see and feel. Meet me here. Hold what I cannot carry. Restore my strength, even if it comes slowly. Amen.
